How USCF Rating is Calculated
The US Chess (USCF) rating system measures player strength based on game results against rated opponents. Unlike FIDE performance rating, USCF rating changes dynamically after each tournament based on expected score and K-factor.
Expected Score Formula
The expected score represents the probability of winning against an opponent:
Expected Score = 1 / (1 + 10^((R_opponent − R_player) / 400))
Rating Change Formula
The rating change depends on the difference between actual score and expected score:
Rating Change = K × (Actual Score − Expected Score) + Bonus (if applicable)
The K-factor determines how fast ratings change and varies depending on player rating and experience.
In some cases, a bonus may be applied when a player's performance significantly exceeds expectations. This bonus increases the total rating gain beyond the base formula.
Example
A player rated 1600 plays against an opponent rated 1600.
Expected score is 0.5.
- Win → rating increases
- Draw → minimal change
- Loss → rating decreases
USCF vs FIDE Rating
USCF ratings are typically higher than FIDE ratings due to different calculation systems and player pools. The formulas and K-factors are not identical, making direct comparison inaccurate.
