How FIDE Performance Rating is Calculated
The FIDE performance rating measures how strong a player performed during a chess tournament compared to the strength of their opponents.
It is calculated using the average rating of the opponents and a rating difference value based on the percentage score achieved in the tournament.
Performance Rating Formula
Performance Rating = Average Opponent Rating + Rating Difference
The rating difference depends on the score percentage achieved during the tournament.
Example
Suppose a player scores 4.5 points out of 7 against opponents with an average rating of 2000.
A score of roughly 64% corresponds to a rating difference of approximately +110 according to the official FIDE performance tables.
The estimated performance rating would therefore be:
2000 + 110 = 2110
Note: Performance rating is independent from rating change calculations. In official FIDE rating updates, rating changes may be limited by the rule K × number of games ≤ 700.
