How the FIDE ELO progression estimate works
This calculator estimates how many FIDE-rated games you may need to reach a target rating, based on your current ELO, expected tournament performance and the number of games per tournament. You can enter your data manually or import your FIDE rating history directly for a personalised projection.
FIDE uses a K-factor to control how much each game affects your rating. Players below 2300 with fewer than 30 rated games use K=40; players rated below 2400 use K=20; and established players above 2400 use K=10. The calculator automatically applies the correct K-factor based on your current rating and games played, and recalculates it when you cross the 2400 threshold during your projection.
The projection is an estimate. Real rating progression depends on the strength of your opponents, your performance consistency across tournaments and the inherent volatility of the ELO system — especially at lower ratings and during periods of rapid improvement.
Use this tool to set realistic training goals and plan your tournament schedule, rather than as an exact rating prediction. The three scenarios — historical pace, optimistic and conservative — give you a range to work with.
